Nepal embraces 1310 mountains which have altitude ranging from 5500m to 8848m above sea level and therefore Nepal is popularly identified as the Himalayan Kingdom. Extraordinarily and especially popular among mountaineers, Nepal holds eight of the world's highest peaks above 8000m which includes Mt. Everest (8850m.), highest peak in the world; Kanchenjunga (8586m.), Makalu (8463m.), Lhotse (8516m.), Cho Oyu (8201m.), Manaslu, (8163m.) Dhaulagiri (8167m.) and Annapurna (8091m.). Moreover, there are more than 1300 mountains over 6000m and among them almost 400 peaks have got authority of permission from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) to mount.

The most famous trekking peaks in Nepal are Island Peak, Lobuche peak, Mera Peak, Cholaste peak, Kwangde peak, in Everest region, Pisang peak, Chulu east peak, Chulu west peak, Tent peak, Dhampus peak, Tilicho peak, Singu Chuli peak, Himchuli peak in Annapurna region and Naya kanga peak, Yala peak in Langtang region. Since 1978, NMA has had the authority to issue mountaineering permits for small-scale peaks.
